We are in the midst of Women’s History Month! What started as Women’s History Week back in 1978 turned into a month-long celebration in 1987. Since 1995, each president has issued an annual proclamation that designates March as Women’s History Month. Each year, the National Women’s History Alliance selects a theme, this year’s being: “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.” The purpose of Women’s History Month is to celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States over time. This year, check out the ways you can celebrate Women’s History Month and support women.
Support Women-Owned Businesses
One of the simplest ways you can celebrate this special month is by supporting women-owned businesses. Did you know that the United States has 12.3 million women-owned businesses? In fact, women started 1,821 businesses every day last year. With this in mind, it should be simple to find a local, women-owned business. This month, and hopefully every month after, show them your support by purchasing their products and services!
Support Women Artists & Authors
Another simple and fun way you can support women this month is by listening to music by women and reading books written by women. Do you need some inspiration? Perhaps you can read “How to Build a Girl” by Caitlin Moran or “The Handmaids Tale” by Margaret Atwood. If you’re in the mood to listen to some music, perhaps you can blast some Beyonce, Kesha, or Taylor Swift. Of course, there are plenty of authors and artists to choose from! Show them a little extra support this month.
Make a Donation
Make a donation to a women’s organization of your choice to celebrate Women’s History Month. This is a simple yet impactful way to potentially make a difference in the lives of many. If you aren’t sure where to start, here are a few women-focused organizations to choose from:
Watch a Movie
There are many movies, both fiction and non-fiction, about women! For instance, Hidden Figures is a true story about 3 female mathematicians who made a huge impact on one of NASA’s biggest operations. On the other hand, for a light family flick, watch Moana or Mulan! Many movies feature strong women, and these just name a few.
Whether you choose to donate to a women’s organization or simply support female authors, artists, or businesses, there are many ways you can celebrate Women’s History Month! Involve your family and friends so we can all come together to recognize the contributions women make to society daily.
