Earth Day is April 22nd! Since 1970, people around the world have come together for events on Earth Day that demonstrate support for environmental protection. With over 75,000 partners in 190 countries, Earth Day is an important day of the year on which attention is focused on the health of our environment. While events may not be occurring this year, there are many ways that you can celebrate Earth Day from the comfort of your home!
Get a Reusable Water Bottle
One of the simplest ways you can contribute on Earth Day is by getting a reusable water bottle! Did you know that less than 30% of plastic water bottles are recycled? Additionally, once it’s in the landfill, many of them end up in the ocean. The easiest way to avoid this is cutting the use of plastic bottles altogether! After all, there are many interesting reusable water bottles to choose from these days, from Hydroflasks to Swells. Choose a new trendy water bottle and help save the planet.
Start a Garden
If you can, try growing your own food in the form of fruits or vegetables! Commercial farming emits harmful chemicals into the air and soil. Not to mention, a high amount of fossil fuels are burned to transport food from commercial farmers to grocery stores. By growing your own produce, you’ll know exactly what goes into your food, while also cutting back on harmful chemicals polluting the environment. You can also minimize packaging waste! Try growing some produce from a box garden on your porch or patio at Arden Place, or you can rent a space in a Charlottesville community garden, such as at Azalea Park.
Shop at the Farmer’s Market
Not everyone has a green thumb, and that’s okay! If this sounds like you, try shopping for produce at a local farmer’s market. This not only supports local farmers but also allows you to enjoy locally-grown and higher quality produce than what you might find at the grocery store.
Learn About Recyclables
While we know that basic items like plastic bottles can be recycled, there might be a lot of objects you use daily that can also be recycled! To celebrate Earth Day, take some time to learn about local recycling rules. This way in the future, you are recycling more than before and not simply tossing items in the trash!
Minimize Food Waste
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food waste is estimated at about 30% to 40% of the food supply in the United States. In fact, we are the global leader in food waste. Food spoilage is one of the main reasons people throw out food, however, more than 80% of people throw out perfectly good food. While it’s easy to be impulsive with your grocery shopping, adding in random items you want in the moment can be a cause of food waste. Although many laws are in place across numerous states that limit the amount of food that is transported to landfills, you can help too! Try to stay on track with your shopping list by not overshopping. This will help you ensure that you actually eat everything that you buy to hopefully help you save money and minimize food waste.
There are many ways that you can celebrate Earth Day! With just a few lifestyle changes, you can even continue to help the environment on a daily basis. Now more than ever, it’s important to contribute to the well-being of our planet!
