Marking its 32nd year, the Virginia Film Festival at the University of Virginia showcases the work of local filmmakers. From October 23rd-27th, they will display 150 films. In addition to films, there will also be a gala, parties, panels and a variety of special guests in attendance. Attendees include actors, internationally-recognized directors and a variety of other guests who come to engage, learn and explore.

Each year, over 100 guest artists visit the Virginia Film Festival for Q&A sessions and discussions. For the 2019 festival, special guests include Ethan Hawke, a praised actor who has received several Tony and Oscar nominations, and Wanuri Kaihu, an award-winning filmmaker. More special guests include Liana Liberato, who currently stars in Hulu’s “Light as a Feather”, and has previously starred in a variety of other films. Other stars include Anna Dowd from “The Handmaid’s Tale”, Steven J. Kung, a writer-director, and many other actors, writers, and directors alike.
On Friday, October 25th, there will be panel discussions that are both free and open to the public. The panels include Women and Work, in which women-filmmakers lead a discussion, VR Filmmaking, and A Critical Eye, in which film critics discuss the industry. On Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th, visit the Virtual Reality Lab for a unique and immersive experience. Here, discover 360 films such as “Everest”, where you follow Sherpa Tenji climbing Mount Everest. In addition to 360 films, engage in interactive VR experiences!
In addition to films, there will also be an Opening Night Gala and a Late Night Wrap Party! In order to kick off the festival, join them in celebration at the Opening Night Gala on October 23rd. From 9:30 pm to midnight, dance to Kool Kats Lite and feast on hors d’oeuvres from Harvest Moon Catering. Tickets for this event are $75 and can be purchased online. Before the festival wraps up, celebrate at the Late Night Wrap Party! On October 26th from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, enjoy food from Three Notch’d Brewery and refreshing Bold Rock Hard Cider.
