Sticking to Your New Year's Resolution

Last month, our sister property Adams Crossing published an article about ideas for your 2018 New Year’s Resolution. Making the resolution is the first step to making a life change, so pat yourself on the back for deciding to better yourself in the coming year. But resolutions mean little without a plan. How will you make your 2018 New Year’s Resolution a success?

Regardless of what you’ve set out to accomplish in 2018, the keys to following through with your New Year’s resolution are accountability and motivation. We’ll take a look at each.

New Year’s Resolution Accountability

Hold yourself accountable to your goal by recording your progress.  This could be with a journal where you reflect daily or weekly on your successes and setbacks, or on a calendar where you check off each day that you worked toward achieving your resolution. You can also set reminders on your phone to give yourself a nudge to fulfill your resolution for that day.

Find someone with a resolution that is similar to yours and check in with each other periodically. You can get together to work on your goal, or just send a simple text to remind each other.

Support Group

Support groups offer a wonderful network to help you in your journey. Whether you aim to lose weight, drink less, quit smoking, or a variety of other ambitions, there is a support group to help you achieve your goal.

New Year’s Resolution Motivation

Some people are very intrinsically motivated, while others require some form of external motivation. If you are the type to sustain your own motivation over a long period of time, just setting the goal may be enough to keep you going when you feel like giving up. If you are like most people and need a little extra boost every now and then, try these tips:

  • Reward yourself with small treats as you stick to your resolution.
  • Give yourself a final prize when your reach your goal or at the end of the year when you’ve followed through with your resolution.
  • Document your progress so that when you’re feeling down, you can look back and see how far you’ve come.
  • Draw a picture or write a description of the version of yourself that you’re working toward. Be sure to include why accomplishing your goal is important to you.

So there is your guide to sticking to your New Year’s resolution. The powerful combination of accountability and motivation will put you in a favorable position to meet your goal.
