With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, the holiday season will be here before we know it! If you’re looking for ways to get in the spirit, there are plenty of events around Charlottesville. In fact, Monticello hosts a variety of events throughout the month including workshops, a 5K, and tours! Come celebrate Christmas at Monticello.
Upcoming Events at Monticello
If you’re from Charlottesville, you’re well aware that Monticello is the unique and beautifully built home of Thomas Jefferson. However, during Christmas time, see it in a way you’ve never seen it before! Explore Monticello with its beautiful holiday decorations, or participate in the Holiday Classic 5K. Christmas at Monticello is a busy time that you won’t want to miss!
Stop by Monticello for one of their famous Wreath Workshops! The garden staff will lead the workshop from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, and will provide all of the materials to help you craft beautiful holiday wreaths. This workshop has been a tradition for 33 years, and they provide over 75 natural materials for crafting! All you need to bring is hand pruners and your creativity. The workshop will be held on November 29th & 30th, and December 1st-2nd, 4th, as well as the 6th-8th. Tickets are $75 and each guest is allowed one wreath.
Stop by on December 1st for the annual open house! Be among the first to explore Monticello with all of its beautiful decorations throughout the first floor on a self-guided tour. Afterward, stop by the gift shop to receive a 10% off coupon towards your purchase and get a head start on your Christmas shopping. From 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, you are free to explore!
On Saturday, December 7th, join in on the Monticello Holiday Classic 5K and Deck the Hall Kids Dash! This family-friendly race is from 8:00 am to 10:00 am, and the Deck the Hall Kids Dash begins at 8:10 am. During the Deck the Hall Kids Dash, kids get to run a loop around the West Lawn. Tickets are $35 until November 30th, and then they become $45. Additionally, friends and family are welcome to watch the race at the top of the mountain!
After the 5K, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, visit the Shop at the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center. They will host Artisan Day, in which local artisans will have handmade gifts, tastings, and demonstrations! Try Monticello honey, Pepper Jelly, and wines. Additionally, the gardeners from Monticello will explain how ingredients are harvested and turned into products. No admission is required for this event, so swing by to get some unique Christmas gifts for friends and family.
Holiday Evening Tours
Visit Monticello after dark for their Holiday Evening Tours on designated days throughout December. Visitors will meet at the Shop at Monticello, enjoy refreshments, and then journey through public and private rooms of Monticello. Additionally, guests will enjoy live performances in the parlor, and be able to explore one of Monticello’s most famous rooms — the Dome Room. Travel back in time to see how people who once lived there celebrated the holidays! Tickets are $65, and the dates can be found on their website.
On December 12th-15th, visit the Holiday Table and Mantel Centerpiece Workshop from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. Led by expert floral designers, use evergreens, herbs, berries, cones, and more to create a masterpiece! Be sure to register beforehand, and purchase your ticket for $35. Create a unique centerpiece to fill your home with joy this holiday season!
