What is Mindfulness?
It’s easy to associate mindfulness with meditation or yoga. However, being mindful also means being present and being aware of what we are doing and our surroundings. Practicing mindfulness allows you to take a pause in your day to recognize what you’re thinking, feeling, and doing at that given moment — without self-judgment. It reminds us to be in the moment instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. There are endless benefits of taking time out of your day to be mindful, such as regulated emotions, and decreased stress, anxiety, and depression. Studies show that mindfulness can also benefit high blood pressure, headaches, and overall wellbeing.
Weekly Mindfulness Sessions
Charlottesville Empowerment Counseling and Wellness Services hosts Weekly Mindfulness Sessions on Mondays from 12:05 pm to 12:55 pm, and Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 6:20 pm. Stop in on your lunch break or after work for 50 minutes of stress-relief, relaxation, and self-care. The private group mindfulness sessions will assist in quieting the mind, among many other things. Sessions are $20. Additionally, you can purchase 4 sessions for $70. Charlottesville Empowerment is located on the Downtown Mall. In addition to their mindfulness sessions, they offer therapy, group therapy, couples counseling, and more. If you have 50 minutes to spare during your day, take the time and give those minutes to yourself. Caring for our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies!
Other Ways to Practice Mindfulness
Can’t make it to Weekly Mindfulness with Charlottesville Empowerment, but need to take a moment to yourself? Not to worry, there are plenty of ways that you can implement mindfulness into your daily routine. One simple way is to sit and focus on breathing in and out. After a few breaths, focus on the temperature in the room, the scents, sounds, and all that surrounds you. Then focus on your thoughts and emotions, without reacting negatively.
Another simple way to practice mindfulness is while you eat. Instead of turning on the TV or working through lunch, focus on your food. Focus on the act of eating, and the flavors that you experience instead of just scarfing it down! Or, if you go on a walk, focus on your surroundings — sight, smells, and sounds. Feel your feet hitting the ground, and the muscles of your legs working as you walk. Just a few minutes of deep breathing and relaxation every day can work wonders! The minute you feel overwhelmed, combat the stress with mindfulness.
