Despite recent news over the past few years about Charlottesville, the city welcomes diversity. In addition to Charlottesville natives, many people from all over the world now call the beautiful city home. The Festival of Cultures is a one-day event to celebrate this diversity with food, vendors, cultural exhibits, and entertainment. The 16th annual Festival of Cultures will take place on May 11th, 2019, at Washington Park from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
What is the Festival of Cultures?
Celebrating diversity is one of the main missions of the Festival of Cultures. However, the message goes deeper than that. It’s about uniting with your fellow residents and learning about each other’s cultures. As the website says, the Festival of Cultures “provides an opportunity for building bridges of communication between new Americans and established residents, and between different cultures residing in our community.” In this day and age, acceptance and education are more important than ever. The Festival of Cultures is an event to celebrate our differences and find unity in our humanity. Completely free and open to the public, anybody is welcome to check out the festival.
From storytelling to music and dancing, the festival is a fun place to learn about new cultures. This year, there will be an oral history studio provided by WTJU FM with WCVE News. New for 2019, the studio will allow immigrants to share their journey through recordings. Everybody has a unique story to share, and this project will help illuminate the perspective of people who otherwise may not have been heard. Khizr Khan, a Pakistani-American immigrant and now resident of Charlottesville, will be welcoming people to the festival. He is the author of “This is Our Constitution” and “An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice.”
An Event for the Whole Family
Bringing awareness to the cultural diversity in Charlottesville, the Festival of Cultures is a family-friendly event so be sure to bring your kids along with you! There will be arts-and-crafts along with other activities including performances from children of The International School, the Tibetan Children’s Choir, Baffa Academy of Irish Dance, and more. For food, there will be a variety of international cuisines such as Mexican, Caribbean, Turkish, and Mediterranean. Shop handmade authentic Mexican toys, Peruvian jewelry, beadwork from Mexico, Tibetan handmade goods and shirts, and more from the artisan vendors on site.
