What is hygge?
The Danish concept of of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) grows in popularity each day among Americans. No single word in English captures the meaning of hygge, but this is how we like to describe it at Arden Place:
Hygge is an experience and a lifestyle characterized by coziness, simplicity, and familiarity.
In a culture where we love to complain about our busyness and value possessions over relationships, hygge helps us reevaluate how we spend our time and what we view as our top priorities. To experience hygge, you don’t need to go out and purchase a slew of new decorations for your apartment — quite the opposite actually. Hygge ideals encourage you to take a look at your material possessions and throw out everything that doesn’t bring you joy, because you should value experiences and relationships over things.
How can I experience hygge?
Hygge isn’t one size fits all. What brings you joy may irritate your roommate or partner, and what fills them up them may bore you. But the following list can be used as inspiration for experiencing hygge in your luxury apartment at Arden Place.
Set up a puzzle table in your apartment for a simultaneously mind-stimulating and relaxing activity. Pick a puzzle with a picture or design you love and that’s not too difficult. You can also invite over a friend or two to work at the puzzle together. Once it’s done, seal and frame your masterpiece to hang as decoration.
Learn to Knit
Knitting isn’t just for your grandma! It’s a repetitive activity that you can do pretty much anywhere, and it gives you a cozy end product to help you further experience that hygge you’re after.
The classic way to unwind: bubble baths! Find a bubble bath soap that smells good and doesn’t irritate your skin, and just unapologetically bask in it.
Brew a Pot of Coffee or Tea
Coffee and tea lovers relish the experience of pouring the warm beverage of their choice into their favorite mug, doctoring it up with the perfect ratio of sugar and cream, and taking the first glorious sip.
A key principle of hygge is the use of soft lights. Turn off harsh fluorescent overhead lights and fill your space with candles, lamps, and twinkly light strands.
Bake Your Favorite Sweets
Baking sweets from your childhood or a pleasant time in your life and indulging creates hygge. Whether it’s cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies, or apple pie, baking your favorite dessert will fill your apartment with its delectable, nostalgic scents — hygge at its finest.
You’re most likely experiencing hygge in some capacity already, but to truly make it a lifestyle you must regularly incorporate multiple elements into your day. We understand that you may not be able to find hygge at work, but this list of inspiration will help you turn your luxury apartment at Arden Place into a cozy retreat.
