Let’s talk about the B-word. Brunch! Who doesn’t love a good brunch? At The Bluegrass Grill & Bakery, they take their B’s very seriously — brunch, bacon, and Benedict. Located in quaint downtown Charlottesville, near the train tracks just behind Water Street garage, it’s easy to miss this little restaurant when you’re driving by. The next time you pass, don’t keep driving! Stop by for a bite to eat — you definitely won’t be disappointed. Parking is located behind the building, but there are a limited number of spots. If you can’t grab a spot there, you can always park in the garage.
Even in the early morning, this place gets crowded fast! Charlottesville residents flock to the popular local joint for the best brunch in town. As you enter the tiny yet adorable eatery, you’ll notice kitschy art and decor, mostly displaying their fondness for bacon. If you can’t find a table inside, there’s a patio with seating outside as well as a bar at the front of the restaurant with a view of the kitchen.
The Bluegrass Grill & Bakery prides themselves on their unique, creative dishes that break the traditional brunch mold. The New York Times even declared their cuisine as “hearty Southern comfort fare,” which is the perfect description. The menu changes on the weekday and the weekend, so be sure to check it out before you go. Of course, specials are available as well and feature southern twists on some of your brunch favorites. All the menus, including the specials, can be found on their website. Even though their bacon is a fan favorite — and let me tell you, it’s delicious — they have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too. All their bread, biscuits, and sweets are made-from-scratch, so you can bet they are tasty! They serve several eggs Benedict dishes that offer a unique spin on the classic dish. Jalapeno hollandaise and pimento cheese? Yes, please!
However, brunch wouldn’t be complete without a refreshing mimosa! If you prefer a spicy kick start to your morning, they also serve a mean Bloody Mary and offer a few other cocktails. If alcohol in the morning isn’t your thing, they serve local coffee from Shenandoah Joe.
In the event that you don’t want brunch, they also have a great selection of lunch items! They do close in the early afternoon, so be sure to plan ahead.
Please note, The Bluegrass Grill & Bakery does not take debit or credit cards. It’s cash and check only, but definitely worth a trip to the ATM. It’s only a short drive from Arden Place, the premier luxury apartment community in Charlottesville, so try it next time you go downtown!
