October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which helps to raise awareness for a disease that impacts so many. The mission is to help those impacted by breast cancer through education, early detection, and support. Every year, people show support for the cause in a variety of different ways — through donations, wearing pink, and participating in a variety of events. Are you curious about how you can get involved during this Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Check out some ways that you can give back to this cause.

Donations are the first thing many people think of when considering giving back. Furthermore, there are a variety of different ways you can donate during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you are choosing a charity to donate to, consider donating to a patient support charity. Patient support charities come in the form of exercise classes, wigs, payment of treatment, and more. Instead of focusing on awareness, patient support charities focus on activities and wellbeing of patients. Examples include Chemo Angels and the American Cancer Society. Additionally, donate to research initiatives that can help fund research for the cure. Examples of research charities include The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Shop Specific Brands

During the month of October and sometimes year-round, certain brands give back for Breast Cancer Awareness. If you happen to go shopping during the month of October, try to search for stores that give a percentage of sales to a good cause. For example, Gap will donate 10% of select bra styles to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Additionally, Avon will donate 15% of sales of particular products to the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer programs. Bubly sparkling water will release a limited-edition grapefruit bubly in pink cans branded with Susan G. Komen and donate $100,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. There are plenty of brands and products that give back this month — be sure to check them out!

Care for Others

Do you know someone in your local community who is battling breast cancer? Whether it’s a family member, neighbor or friend, there is plenty that you can do to help them. Whether it’s making a meal for their family, offering to help out around the house, or simply spending time with them, it can be extremely helpful. Often times, a kind gesture can make a huge difference in the lives of others.

Educate Yourself

With all this talk of breast cancer awareness, it’s a good time to gain knowledge about the disease. Learn why it’s important to get regular mammograms, and educate others on the matter as well. Breast cancer impacts so many, and with an increase in awareness it could help encourage women to get regular mammograms so the disease can be caught in its early stages. Keep in mind, the third Friday in October is National Mammography Day. Be proactive and encourage women in your life to partake.

From donations, to shopping specific brands and simply educating yourself, you can promote breast cancer awareness month. How will you participate to support this cause?
